Definition
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that an answer engine, a system that returns one composed answer rather than a list of links, selects it as a source. The term predates generative AI and originally covered featured snippets and voice assistants; it now overlaps heavily with GEO.
In practice the two terms describe the same work from different angles. AEO emphasises the shape of a page: a question-shaped heading, a direct first sentence, a table or list the engine can extract. GEO emphasises the brand across sources: consistency, evidence, authority and the narrative the engine repeats.
Why it matters
Answer engines quote a sentence, not a page. Content that does not contain a quotable, direct answer is skipped even when it ranks well.
How it is measured
By tracking which pages are cited for which questions, and by checking each key page for a direct answer, structure and freshness. flowgen AI Demand shows content coverage per question.
