Definition
AI Referral Traffic is the traffic a website receives from AI platforms: visits that follow a cited link in an answer, and visits that follow a recommendation without a click, when the buyer searches for the brand or types the address after reading the answer. The first kind carries a referrer; the second usually does not.
Because so much AI-driven traffic arrives without a clear referrer, counting clicks on citation links undercounts the effect. A fairer reading compares branded search, direct visits and enquiries in the weeks after a mention appears, next to questions that were not acted on.
Why it matters
It is the first business metric GEO moves. Measured well, it connects AI visibility to enquiries and pipeline; measured badly, it is dismissed as too small to matter.
How it is measured
Tagged referrals from AI platforms plus an estimated lift in branded and direct traffic after dated actions, labelled estimated. flowgen Performance shows both next to the actions on a timeline.
