Definition
An answer engine takes a question, gathers information from several sources and writes one composed reply instead of returning a list of links. ChatGPT with search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are the best-known examples.
The answer usually names a few brands and cites a few sources. Which brands and which sources appear depends on what the engine retrieved, how consistent the information was across sources, and how easy each page was to quote.
Why it matters
Customers increasingly decide inside the answer. If your brand is absent there, the website visit never happens.
How it works
The question is interpreted and often split into sub-queries, candidate pages are retrieved, compared for relevance and consistency, and the answer is written with citations. Not every platform searches the web for every question.
