Definition
Generative Engine Optimization is the full name of GEO. The term was popularised by a 2024 KDD paper that tested which content changes raised a source’s visibility in generative search in a benchmark setting, with citations, statistics and quotations among the most effective. The paper’s results are a direction, not a guarantee for live platforms, which change weekly.
As a discipline it covers the whole cycle: understanding what buyers ask AI, measuring how the brand appears, finding the gaps and their causes, creating and distributing the information engines need, correcting what they get wrong, and measuring the change. Platforms that stop at measurement are monitoring tools; GEO as a practice ends in an action.
Why it matters
The name matters because it fixes the goal: not a position on a page, but presence in a generated answer, with the brand’s own facts as the evidence.
How it is measured
On a fixed prompt set over time: visibility, citation share, narrative alignment, claim accuracy and competitor gap, each with a sample size and run date.
