Definition
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand present, accurate and preferred in the answers that generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews compose for users. Where SEO competes for a position on a results page, GEO competes to be the claim an engine chooses to repeat and the source it chooses to cite.
GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it: pages still have to be crawlable, structured and authoritative. It adds three concerns SEO never had to answer directly. Does the engine understand the brand consistently across sources? Does it have evidence it can lift into an answer? Is the brand’s content the kind an engine cites?
Why it matters
Buyers increasingly read one composed answer instead of comparing websites, so a brand that is absent from the answer is absent from the shortlist, whatever its search ranking.
How it is measured
GEO is measured on a fixed set of buyer questions run on each AI platform over time: AI Visibility, citation share, narrative accuracy and competitor gap. flowgen AI Visibility gives a first reading from one website address.
